Bolivia Closes 2018 with Export Record of Quinoa

La Paz, Dec 28 (Prensa Latina) Bolivia will conclude 2018 with an export record of quinoa, since sales so far of the 33,000 tons of this grain has earned 100 million dollars.

Quinoa International Center director Edgar Soliz highlighted the opening of new markets during the 2018 Accountability of the Ministry of Rural Development and Lands.

He specifically referred to the recent export of 40 tons to China, which increased the volumes and value of sales of this product compared to the previous year, from 32,000 to 33,000 tons, and from 92 million to 100 million dollars in income.

We had new markets, such as China, in particular, but also Mexico. This encourages producers to increase their production locally, he said.

On the other hand, Soliz noted that over the past two years domestic consumption of quinoa per capita has increased from 1.1 to 2.3 kilograms annually.

It means that national consumption has reached more than 23,000 tons, so we are matching what is export and national consumption, he stressed.

Quinoa is a very complete, nutritious and easily digestible food, which despite being part of the traditional diet in some communities, in recent years has gained international recognition, because it is higher in biological value, nutritional and functional quality than traditional cereals such as wheat, corn, rice and oats.
