John Francis KLEIN, Jr.

February 28, 1942 - August 25, 2016

John Francis Klein, loving husband of Juana Klein and loving father to John Lester, Marcos, and Bridget, embarked on his final journey on August 25, 2016.

John was born February, 1942 in San Francisco, California. John led a full life of caring for his family, serving his community, and adventuring.

An architect by training, he served in the Peace Corps in Peru, studied Bossa Nova guitar in Brazil, and explored the world, including a family trek to Machu Picchu. John could do anything: ride a bike like a Le Mans competitor, swim across a pre-drought Huntington Lake (and back), hike into wilderness and befriend beasts, rebuild houses (and probably Mt. Rushmore if needed), and create almost anything.

He was the kind and protective older brother to his five siblings: Cris, Sue, Carol, Cia and Ed, the loving father-in-law to Vanessa and Julia, and loving grandfather to Johnny and Valerie Klein. John was a joyful, loving friend to many with his intelligence, imagination, and subtle humor. He loved life, endured its challenges with grace, and brought his energy and caring to all that he did.

John served the city of San Leandro with Redevelopment and Housing work. He was especially committed to building services for women and children and developed the shelter "Building Futures with Women and Children." John also served on the shelter's board and Alameda County Housing Authority. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to "Building Futures with Women and Children" at 1395 Bancroft Ave., San Leandro, CA. 94577.

A wake will be held at 5:00 pm on September 9 at Santos-Robinson's Mortuary, 160 Estudillo Ave., San Leandro, CA 94577
