Now Online: Wikilengua.Org

As the third most spoken language (with 400+ million users in over 21 countries), Spanish got its own online tool on January 11 (http://www.wikilengua.org).

Based on the Wikipedia model, the site was created by a collaboration of linguistic experts to spread an appreciation for the Spanish language and to assist in the proper use of Spanish grammar and vocabulary. The initial content was derived from dictionaries and reference books.

The site is free and open to users; Wikilengua contributors must register in order to edit entries, and supervisors filter out contributions judged to be inaccurate or inappropriate. One goal is to provide idioms, expressions and slang used outside Spain -- Castillian Spanish being the basis of most Spanish textbooks and learning guides.
